THE FIRE BALL XII: FREEDOM
This past year saw an historic record of anti-Queer legislation introduced in all 50 states; more than half specifically targeted trans people, deliberately weaponizing misinformation, ignorance, and fear. Amidst this continued assault on the ability of Queer people to simply exist, we here at The Fire Ball find ourselves asking, “What is freedom?” In Tony Kushner’s award winning play, Angels in America, Belize asserts that Francis Scott Key, when penning the National Anthem, “…knew what he was doing. He set the word "free" to a note so high nobody could reach it. That was deliberate.”
We invite you to The Fire Ball XII: FREEDOM in the spirit of community and accountability. Our collective freedom will forever remain out of reach, if we sacrifice each other for the sake of expedient self-interest. Freedom, like community, requires honesty, humility, and work. It can start with a fierce and fabulous night of Queer joy, but it must end with a (re)commitment to Queer solidarity.
We cannot wait to see you, and always remember: Come as you are. Come as you want to be.
